Diabetes Prevention and Treatment
Worldwide, diabetes is the eighth-leading cause of death, contributing to more than 5 million deaths each and every year. The numbers are only rising. Lions worldwide are confronting this global health emergency by raising awareness through Strides events and tag days, expanding access to care through screening and treatment programs and helping improve quality of life through diabetes camps and community recreational programs.
The Thorold Lions Club supports two camps for diabetic children and their families that are available to Thorold residents. Camp Dorset provides a vacation opportunity for dialysis patients and their families. With its own on-site state-of-the-art dialysis centre, Camp Dorset is a welcome haven for diabetics who rely on dialysis for their health and well being.
Camp Huronda is a camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. Together, children can take charge of their diabetes instead of letting it define them. Campers gain new levels of independence in managing their diabetes and feel empowered to continue the healthy practices they learn at camp.
